Sildenafil
Sildenafil is a medication that is used to treat male erectile dysfunction, otherwise known as impotence. It can also be used to help those suffering from increased blood pressure in the lungs which is also known as pulmonary arterial hypertension. This type of medication is typically prescribed to men who cannot achieve, or fail to maintain, an erection before or during sexual intercourse.
Sildenafil citrate is the chemical name of the medication, however, it is more widely known by its brand name, Viagra. It is produced by the US-based pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, and is a prescription only medication. It is available to buy online in the UK through registered pharmacies after a short consultation with a registered doctor. Viagra sildenafil is the most popular medication for erectile dysfunction, mostly due to its long, successful history of effective treatment.
How does it work?
Sildenafil citrate works by increasing blood flow throughout the body, particularly around the penis. When a man is aroused, signals are sent through the nervous system to the penis. An enzyme called cGMP is produced which widens the blood vessels and allows for an erection to occur. After ejaculation, cGMP is broken down by another enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5, which counteracts cGMP and the blood vessels to return to normal, meaning the penis becomes flaccid again. Erectile dysfunction can occur when this process happens too early.
Sildenafil tablets work by preventing the natural breaking down of the cGMP enzyme by phosphodiesterase type 5, which means blood vessels stay open for longer. This allows for a firmer, longer-lasting erection.
How are they taken?
Sildenafil tablets are taken orally. They are a diamond shape and blue in colour. When prescribed for erectile dysfunction, the sildenafil dosage options are 25mg, 50mg and 100mg. A maximum of one pill should be taken daily to treat this particular condition with effects lasting from four to six hours. It is advised to take Sildenafil up to 60 minutes before sexual intercourse for the best results.
Do sildenafil tablets cause side effects?
Viagra sildenafil tablets have been successfully treating erectile dysfunction since 1998 with little cause for concern. Though some men will experience very mild side effects, they are not at all common and are usually temporary. Such effects could include heartburn, headaches, stomach problems and facial flushing. More serious effects are rare, but could include priapism and changes to your vision or hearing.
